Conservatory Lighting Types And Uses

A conservatory isn’t just a room on the side of the house that gets used throughout the summer and is abandoned for the rest of the year. A quality, well designed and built conservatory can be a useful extension which can be used all year around. A conservatory can be a separate room from the rest of the house or it could be used as an extension of your kitchen, living room, or even dining room.

The position and use of the conservatory will affect what type of conservatory furniture you use inside the room. Obviously if you are using it as a dining room then a traditional table and chairs will be more at home, however if you plan on using it as a chill out room then maybe a comfortable sofa or maybe traditional rattan conservatory furniture would be the best choices.

However, it isn’t just the furniture in the conservatory that will affect the atmosphere within the room. The conservatory lighting will totally alter the mood and atmosphere within the space.

The obvious way of controlling light is to use conservatory blinds during the day. These can be on either the roof, sides of the conservatory or possibly both. Investing in some quality blinds will not only allow you to control the light within the room during the day time, but it will also help to control the heat by keeping the room cool in the summer and keeping the heat in during the winter.

Now we have covered how to control the light during the bright days of summer, we will look at lighting options for the evening and during the darker days.

Chandelier – Something that only the larger conservatories can pull off, but something which also creates an amazing focal point in your conservatory that will be sure to wow your guests and make a great talking point. A large chandelier should provide enough lighting, however it is usually combined with some wall lighting around the outsides to provide a choice of lighting options.

Wall Lighting – This is the most common type of lighting for a conservatory. An average size conservatory would probably have 3 or 4 of these lights around the room, either all running from the same switch or on individual switches.

Floor Lighting – Depending on the style of the conservatory it may not be suitable to have wall lights put in, in this case you may opt for a floor standing light which you can use when needed. Any floor standing light is suitable, however make sure it fits in with the style of the conservatory.

Table Lighting – Often used to compliment any of the above options, a simply lantern or candle arrangement on the table can provide a romantic, subtle lighting, especially for those romantic meals in the conservatory at night.

If you already have a conservatory, or if its something you are looking at adding to your property soon, do not overlook the lighting options, as most people do. Just because a conservatory is a “light” atmosphere – don’t forget you will want to use that space during the evenings and winter.
